Miss Montana Sends Positive Message on Autism

By January 11, 2013

Saturday, January 12, is the 2013 Miss America Pageant. Among the contestants is Alexis Wineman, Miss Montana. What makes Ms. Wineman unique is her openness about living with autism. Alexis was diagnosed with autism when she was 11 years old. She believes that if she had been diagnosed earlier, her life may have been a little easier; however, it is not something that has stopped her from achieving her dreams.

Tomorrow Miss Montana will be competing with other accomplished women for the crown of Miss America. She stated the following in her finalist video: "We cannot cure what is not a sickness, but we can begin to understand autism, and help those with the condition to unlock the potential that lies within all of us." Alexis intends to use the platform of Miss America, if she wins, to help spread awareness about autism.

The Miss America pageant can be viewed online here: Miss America. You may also watch the pageant on January 12, 2013 at 9PM EST on ABC.
